WHAT IS THELKHUM?

We all know that the notion of a singular "formula for happiness" holds broad appeal for millions of people, And yet equally, we know that fulfilment is deeply personal and arises from our unique experiences, personalities, and values.

While a one-size-fits-all recipe for happiness may not exist, researchers have identified several key ingredients that enrich life. Some of these eight vital elements form the acronym “THELKHUM".  Each letter of THELKHUM relates to an aspect, attitude or a human value. This is made up of:

The relevance for each one of these 'life components' is explained below.

The T is for Time. Of all the resources available to us as human beings, time is the most precious. Once our time has been spent, we can never get it back. How we choose to spend our time ultimately defines who we are and determines the path our lives take. Time should not be squandered on meaningless pursuits but instead invested wisely in enriching experiences.

We only have a finite amount of time in our lives. The hours tick steadily on, and before we know it, months and years have slipped by. Time marches relentlessly forward. We cannot stop it or slow it down. The span of our lives is short compared to the grand scope of the universe. This brevity makes each moment we have incredibly valuable.

Time shapes our identities and our purpose. The activities we devote our time to, whether work, family, hobbies, or service to others, give meaning to our days. Time engages us in the human experience, connecting us to other people and the world around us. Without time, we would not exist.

But with great value comes fragility. Time unused is lost forever. Once it has gone by, we cannot reclaim it. We must make judicious use of our time, balancing priorities and obligations. Wasted time leaves voids that cannot be filled. We must make every moment matter.

Our time on this earth is limited. We only get so many hours, days, and years. Let us embrace the gift of time. Let us fill our moments with purpose and passion. Our time is precious - let us spend it wisely.

2. The Importance of Good Health

The H is for Health. Good health is the foundation for a full and happy life. It impacts every aspect of our existence - how we feel, our capabilities, and even how long we live. That is why we must make earning and maintaining good health a top priority.

Robust health provides us with energy, vitality, and an overall sense of wellbeing. When we are healthy, we feel strong, alert, and optimistic. We are able to undertake all of our daily tasks and responsibilities with ease. Good health gives us the stamina we need to succeed at work, enjoy leisure time, and thrive in our relationships.

Without health, even simple activities become difficult. Bad health hinders our performance, drains our spirits, and prevents us from realising our potential. Illness and injuries limit what we can do physically, mentally, socially, and professionally. Poor health makes life an uphill battle.

Beyond how we feel day-to-day, our long-term health impacts our lifespan. Those in good health tend to live longer lives with a lower risk of serious diseases. They not only survive longer, but enjoy an enhanced quality of life into their later years. Good health adds life to our years.

To earn and sustain robust health, we must make smart lifestyle choices. Eating nutritious foods, staying active, managing stress, and getting proper sleep all help us achieve wellness. Avoiding harmful habits like smoking and limiting alcohol are also key. Regular checkups and screening tests detect any problems early.

Good health is a gift we give ourselves through our daily actions. There is no single quick fix - it takes diligent effort sustained over a lifetime. But the rewards are immeasurable. There is no greater wealth than wellness. Let us treat our health as the invaluable treasure it is. The time we invest to improve it will pay off manifold. Our good health is worth every ounce of effort.

3. The Power of Empathy

The E is for Empathy. Empathy, the ability to understand and share the feelings of others, enriches our lives and promotes harmony in society. We should all strive to approach each day, interaction, and decision with empathy.

Living empathetically deepens our connections with others. When we make the effort to see situations through someone else’s perspective, we forge stronger bonds. Practicing empathy leads to greater compassion, forgiveness, and patience in our relationships. It allows us to relate to people across different backgrounds.

Empathy also inspires us to help others in need. By getting in touch with what another person feels, we feel more compelled to provide support, whether it’s lending an ear or taking action. Empathy moves us to volunteer, donate to charity, and enact change. Caring for our fellow humans makes the world a little bit better.

Importantly, empathy curbs hurtful behaviours like bullying, discrimination, and violence. It counteracts selfishness by reminding us that other people have feelings too. It is much harder to mistreat someone when we empathize with their emotions. Conflict resolution comes easier when both sides are willing to see the other’s point of view.

Living with empathy brings inner rewards as well. Engaging in regular perspective-taking exercises our emotional intelligence. It helps us become more self-aware and introspective as we tune into the feelings of others. Practicing empathy can also reduce stress and promote overall wellbeing.

Empathy must extend to all people, not just those most like us or closest to us. We need “radical empathy” that reaches out to strangers, to those of differing races, religions, orientations, abilities, and opinions. Broad empathy advances diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Make the commitment to infuse your daily life with empathy. Start by really listening to others, not just waiting for your turn to talk. Seek to understand different worldviews. Volunteer in your community. Speak out against cruelty and injustice. Lead with an open heart and mind. If we all do our part, empathy can transform society.

4. Finding Happiness Through Love

The L is for Love. One of the surest paths to happiness is surrounding ourselves with love - not just romantic love, but love in its many forms. The bonds of family, friends, community, and passion for causes lift our spirits and bring meaning to our lives.

The unconditional love of parents, children, siblings and other relatives provides comfort, security, and a sense of belonging. Family love nurtures us throughout our lives. Sharing holidays, milestones, and everyday moments with loved ones fills our hearts with joy. Laughing, crying, celebrating and consoling one another creates irreplaceable bonds.

The love between friends, too, has immense value. Friends who share our interests, understand our quirks, and lend a sympathetic ear are treasures. Their companionship spices up even ordinary days. Conversations, adventures, and time well spent with friends make life’s journey brighter.

Feeling part of a broader community also contributes to happiness. When we love our neighbourhood, city, or country, we take pride in our surroundings and seek to contribute. Getting involved in community life and causes fosters purpose. Loving our community motivates us to help others.

Romantic love is an exuberant, yet deep love that forms an unshakable bond between two people. A devoted partner doubles the pleasure of good times and halves the pain of hard times. Their affection lifts our confidence and self-worth. Building a life with a beloved fulfils our longing for connection.

We must not overlook self-love, either. Caring for our wellbeing through healthy habits and activities enriches our lives. Pursuing our passions and interests fans our inner sparks of joy. Believing in our inherent worth helps us reach our potential.

The many manifestations of love are key ingredients to a happy life. They satisfy our essential need for connection and belonging. By seeking love, in its many forms, we unlock happiness.

Here is a draft persuasive piece on the importance of kindness in creating good vibes and happiness:

5. The Ripple Effects of Kindness

The K is for Kindness. indness is a simple yet powerful force that uplifts others and promotes positivity. Through small acts of consideration, we can dramatically improve moods, relationships, and communities. Practicing kindness generates good vibes that ripple outwards.

Being kind often starts with paying attention to those around us. Noticing when someone needs assistance or could use encouragement and taking action reflects caring. Going out of our way to open a door, give up a seat, or help carry heavy bags may seem minor but shows goodwill. Simple courtesies like saying “please” and “thank you” spread respect.

Offering words of affirmation is another way to radiate kindness. Complimenting others’ talents and efforts recognises their value. Writing a positive review or recommendation acknowledges good work. Even just flashing a smile spreads warmth.

Performing acts of service without expectation brightens spirits immensely. Surprising someone by doing a chore they dislike or bringing them a special treat makes them feel supported. Volunteering our time boosts communities. Donating to worthy causes makes a material difference in lives.

Practicing patience and forgiveness are also impactful acts of kindness. Accepting flaws and differences counteracts judgment. Giving people the benefit of the doubt increases compassion. Letting go of grudges and bitterness lifts heavy burdens.

Being kind should become our reflex rather than an exception. When kindness becomes our default, we transform environments. Kindness relieves stress, soothes anxiety, and elevates moods. It forges connections and dissipates negativity. With enough acts of kindness, we create a groundswell of good vibes, building a happier world for all.

6. The Quiet Power of Humility

The H is for Humility. Humility, defined as the quality of having a modest view of one's own importance, has become an undervalued virtue in our self-promoting world. But embracing humility can greatly contribute to happiness and fulfillment in our lives and communities.

A humble disposition leads to open-mindedness. Rather than assuming we have all the answers, humility allows us to recognize that there is always more to learn. This fosters better listening, self-reflection, and continual growth. Practicing humility expands perspectives.

Humility also forges stronger connections. When we are humble, we are less likely to dominate conversations and more likely to show genuine interest in others. This cultivates more equal, fulfilling relationships. Humility helps us find common ground.

In leadership and teamwork, humility plays a crucial role. Humble leaders invite diverse opinions and acknowledge mistakes. They empower others to use their talents fully. A touch of humility in competitive situations can also smooth partnerships and negotiations.

Importantly, humility directs focus away from the self and onto making a positive difference. Volunteering, donating to charity, caring for others become priorities over personal gain. We realize our fulfillment comes from lifting up people and society.

Living humbly brings inner peace and contentment. Without ego constantly wanting more, we instead appreciate what we have. Humility allows joy to come from small moments of beauty, laughter, and connection that we might otherwise overlook.

While flashy confidence may grab attention, gentle humility moves people over the long-term. It speaks of self-assuredness requiring no external praise. Practicing humility does not diminish us, but instead elevates how we walk through the world and treat others. In this way, humility seeds deep happiness.

7. The Promise of Acquired Knowledge & Understanding

The U is for Understanding.  Knowledge is power - not just abstract power, but the power to direct our lives and shape our world for the better. When we dedicate ourselves to lifelong learning, we unlock skills, efficiency, and fulfillment that ripple outwards to benefit our families, communities, and society overall.

Knowledge allows us to understand the world and how it works at a deeper level. The more we learn about human psychology, nature, technology, systems, and more, the better we can navigate life's terrain. Knowledge helps us solve problems, make informed decisions, and achieve goals based on facts rather than guessing. It provides a foundation to build upon.

Targeted knowledge grants efficiency. Learning specialized skills - whether vocational, relational, creative, or analytical - makes us more capable and effective. We can get more done in less time and with less wasted effort. We can focus on high-impact actions tailored to our strengths. Knowledge breeds competence and confidence.

As we gain knowledge, we also gain freedom to chart our own journeys. We are no longer limited by what we do not know. Instead, we can pursue passions, embark on ventures, and realize dreams using the knowledge we have amassed. We write our own stories.

The quest for knowledge also unlocks happiness. Our minds feel energized and engaged when we are learning. Mastering new skills provides a profound sense of accomplishment. Shared knowledge strengthens bonds between people. Most of all, knowledge allows us to make positive impacts in the lives of others.

From the mundane to the sublime, knowledge empowers us to make better choices each day. Its tendrils reach into every area of life. Make the commitment to seek knowledge, both broad and deep. Absorb insights from trusted sources. Keep growing. The rewards of acquired knowledge are without limit.

8. Making Memories

The M is for Making Memories. Memories aren't just mental snapshots; they're threads woven into the tapestry of our lives, enriching our existence with vibrant hues of joy, comfort, and meaning. Making memories isn't just about filling photo albums or social media feeds; it's about nurturing our well-being and shaping who we become. Here's why:

Memories fuel our emotional reservoir:

Life is an unpredictable journey, and sometimes we encounter stormy weather. During these challenging times, our memories act as a warm hearth, offering solace and strength. Recalling a cherished moment shared with loved ones, achieving a personal goal, or simply witnessing a breathtaking sunset can rekindle hope and resilience.

Memories bind us to others:

Shared experiences forge deep connections, and memories are the anchors that hold these bonds strong. Recounting funny mishaps, celebrating milestones together, or simply reminiscing about inside jokes strengthens our sense of belonging and reminds us that we're not alone in this human experience.

Memories give life meaning and purpose:

As we accumulate experiences, we weave a narrative of our own lives. Our victories and defeats, moments of love and loss, all contribute to the unique tapestry of our being. Reflecting on these memories allows us to find meaning in our journey, appreciate how far we've come, and chart a course for the future.

Memories shape who we are:

The choices we make, the risks we take, and the experiences we seek all contribute to shaping our personalities and values. As we create new memories, we learn from our past, embrace new possibilities, and evolve into the best versions of ourselves. So, go forth and make memories! Savour that delicious meal with loved ones, embark on that daring adventure, or simply take a moment to appreciate the beauty around you. Every experience, big or small, adds a precious thread to the vibrant tapestry of your life. Remember, the happiest moments often don't lie in material possessions or fleeting trends, but in the richness of the memories we create along the way. Let's keep weaving a life filled with vibrant colours, heartwarming moments, and memories that bring a smile to our faces, even on the rainiest of days.

At the end of our lives, we will focus more on the wonderful experiences we have enjoyed and the memories we have made.
